Discover Financial Services

Discover Financial Services made a commitment to community when it turned an abandoned store on Chicago’s South Side Chatham neighborhood into a Call Center employing over 500 people. Most of those employed are Black and live in the community. It has become Discover’s #1 Call Center in the country.  A model for success, they hope to influence other corporations to invest in the inner city.

Denis and Martha Pierce

Denis and Martha Pierce have been life-long philanthropists. Through the Pierce Family Foundation, Denis and Martha Pierce have consistently supported Margaret’s Village over the years with grants and technology assistance. “The Pierce Family Foundation invests in targeted organizations and projects that impact the Chicago community at large, building a stronger and more equitable sector.  One of their funding priorities is meeting the needs of people experiencing homelessness.  The Foundation is sunsetting this year.

Juatise Gathings

Juatise Gathings was the Regional Operations Director when we initially formed a relationship with Discover Financial Services. Growing up in Chicago, Gathings knew the potential impact the new call center could make on her community. “We’re proud that almost 90% of our employees live within five miles of the center,” she said, “Well before being a Discover employee, I was a girl from the South Side first.” Juatise was with Discover Financial Services when this story “Banking on the Community” was broadcast on WTTW.

Elbert Walters III

Powering Chicago will be recognized for “turning on the lights” at the Vincennes Senior Center.  We were literally in the dark, with only a few lights working in the entire center,” lamented  Angela Hicks, Margaret’s Village Executive Director. After receiving a call from Ms. Hicks last year,  Powering Chicago’s Executive Director, Elbert Walters III knew something needed to be done. He led the project to find the resources to retrofit all lights and correct many electrical issues in the senior center. Every light in the building is now operational.  Mr. Walters has provided leadership on other projects and has provided his expertise to help Margaret’s Village consistently on behalf of Powering Chicago.
